This gauging technology allows us to measure thickness accurately to 0.00001 inches (0.0005 mm).

Thickness is the measured distance between both sides of a flat object, such as a high quality precision metal shim. Thickness can also apply to tube-shaped objects such as a pipe, which has a thickness that is the difference between the outer and inner diameters. Thickness can also apply to the diameter of a round or rod shaped object, like a rod.
It is important for manufacturers to be aware of the thicknesses of their products. This thickness of the parts will end up effecting their performance when inserted into a bigger product like a machinery. The thickness is especially important for high quality precision shims. This is because they need to be able to fit in the empty spaces between parts on a shaft so the precision shims can fulfill their purpose.
In conclusion, how well a part fits within the tolerance of its thickness matters because the thickness of the part affects its performance.
The units that thickness is usually measured in are inches (English) or millimeters (S.I.). The thickness of a part is usually measured using a tool called the thickness gauge. This mechanical instrument clamps on parallel but opposite sides of a part to measure the thickness. The “clamp” of the thickness gauge is a jaw with steel contact pins that won’t damage the part during the measurement process.
Once the thickness gauge is done clamping down the part, it’ll reveal the thickness of the part by displaying a number on either an analog dial or a digital screen. There are also pocket sized variants used for measuring thicknesses for briefly so the manufacturing process won’t be interrupted or halted while the parts are measured for the right thicknesses. Thickness gauges are important to ensure that the thicknesses of parts stay within the tolerance level so they’ll be considered useful.
