Automatic Transmission Parts

In the automotive industry, an automatic transmission is a component that transfers power from an engine to both of the drive wheels. Automatic transmissions consist of clutches, drive shafts, planetary gear sets, precision shims, precision thrust washers, and metal stampings. What makes an automatic transmission stand out compared to other types of transmissions is that an automatic transmission only requires the driver to shift the gears using a lever called the gear selector. This would be only for designating forward, reverse, or park.  Otherwise, while the driver is operating the car, no input is required to change gears on the automatic transmission. The gear selector will operate different gear sets and clutches in the automatic transmission, which will lead to different torque-to-turn ratios. Precision shims can also keep these gears in place, improving the torque-to-turn ratios.

Automatic transmissions use a wide variety of turning gears to operate, especially gears placed in between surfaces inside the clutches. These gears and surfaces need to have precision metal shims occupying the spaces so the gears don’t grind on the surfaces and damage the automatic transmission. The precision shims will also prevent the gears from sliding back and forth causing slippage, which can ruin and damage the automatic transmission. High quality precision shims will be needed for the job with their thicknesses only depending on the thickness of the gears, and the amount of space on either side of them.
