In the automotive industry, a transfer case is a part of the drivetrain of four-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive, and other multiple powered axle vehicles. The transfer case serves to transfer power from the transmission to the front and rear axles by means of drive shafts.
Transfer cases can be designed to allow for normal road use, synchronizing the difference between the rotation of the front and rear wheels – since the front and rear tires never turn at the same speed. Transfer cases designed for off-road usage can mechanically lock the front and rear drive shafts in what is the equivalent of a differential lock.
There are several places in the transfer case that requires the support of high quality precision metal shims. Precision shims are also used for the differential section of the front axle. This section consists of two gears enmeshed in a differential casing, the pinion gear driving the ring gear which is attached to the front axle. The ring gear could grind against the casing due to friction, so precision metal shims would be needed to not only reduce the friction between these two parts, but the shims will also ensure that both differential gears are fully enmeshed.
