Metal stamping is an operation where mechanical stamping presses are used to turn sheet metal, coil steel, or steel blanks into parts of the desired shape by utilizing numerous processes such as blanking, punching, bending, and other processes. At Northern Industrial Manufacturing, metal stamping is used for manufacturing flat parts with relatively simple geometry such as disks, washers, or even our high quality precision shims.
Northern Manufacturing works with automotive customers like General Motors, Daimler, and ZF on a daily basis ensuring they have the correct inventory needed to keep their assembly lines running. We also ensure that every part we stamp is the highest quality at the most reduced lead times. This makes us one of the best and most effective U.S. stamping companies in the country, especially in regard to automotive part stamping solutions.
Whether your volumes are 5,000 pieces annually or 10 million, consider Northern Industrial for your high volume production stamping needs.
At Northern Industrial Manufacturing, metal stamping is used for manufacturing flat parts with relatively simple geometry such as disks, washers, or even our high quality precision shims. There are other processes of manufacturing parts such as die casting and machining, but this is different than metal stamping. Metal stamping can leave a high rate of scrap metal in the manufacturing process, which in certain cases can cost the manufacturers a lot of money, but the ease and effectiveness of the stamping process can usually overcome this cost for high volume applications.
Machining is the process of cutting away material to produce a part with certain geometry. Machining is useful for manufacturing three dimensional parts and has good control over surface finish. However, machining is a time consuming and ineffective process for high quantity production and doesn’t work well on sheet metal as it will deform before it can even begin. Metal stamping on the other hand manufactures parts at a faster rate and is therefore effective for high quantity production and works better with sheet metal than machining.
Metal stamping has numerous industry based applications such as applications for the automotive industry, and heavy duty truck markets. One of the flat parts that stamping manufactures for the automotive industry is high quality precision shims. These shims are usually ring shapes pressed out of sheet metal with disk shapes pressed out of them all at once using compound tooling. Metal stamping is the least expensive option to use for us to manufacture shims as they are flat, have simple geometry, and usually requires high quantity production for manufacturing.
The first and most fundamental process that Northern Industrial Manufacturing products go through is the stamping process. Northern Industrial utilizes a variety of different press sizes from 60 tons to 175 tons. While we can stamp steel of all types, sizes and shapes our primary stamping range specifications are:
Northern Industrial Manufacturing has chosen to exclusively use compound tooling to manufacture our products. The advantages this compound tooling offers Northern Industrial and thus its customers are:
