With a number of presses operating daily and the speed in which they operate being high, we have developed a method for maintaining our customers tooling investment in house. The ability to maintain our own tooling has led to an inherent flexibility to provide our customers with preventive maintenance, ensuring that our production tooling is maintained on our schedule.
By vertically integrating to include the maintenance of our production tooling we have been able to:
Compound tooling is similar to progressive tooling in that they both perform multiple processes to manufacture parts out of sheet metal. The main difference is that compound tooling uses one stroke to perform all of its metal forming processes to manufacture parts, while progressive tooling uses one stroke per each process to manufacture parts. Other advantages of the progressive die are precision, and quick production of parts that have tight tolerances with minimal scrap left behind. However, because the progressive tool uses multiple strokes to fabricate a part, it has a lower production rate than the compound tool and is more expensive as well. So, the compound die’s use of just one stroke to manufacture a part allows it to not only run faster at a lower cost, but it also works well with fabricating parts with really simple designs.
As a method of fabrication, compound tooling has many applications, with some of these applications being in the automotive industry. One of these automotive applications is for the production of high quality precision shims. Precision shims have a simple, ring-shaped design that are usually required to be manufactured in large quantities. This is why metal stamping is the cheapest option to use to fabricate precision shims, as it has a high production rate. The use of compound tooling in metal stamping to fabricate the precision shims will further increase the production rate as the simple design of the precision shims will allow it to be fabricated in just one stroke.
In conclusion, compound tooling, used by metal stamping, is the fastest and cheapest option for manufacturing high quality precision shims.
Northern Industrial Manufacturing’s compound stamping solutions will bring your components to market on time and within budget at the highest level of quality possible. With a goal of being the automotive industry’s “go to” source for high quality parts manufacturing, we would love to provide you a competitive quote for your compound stamping needs.
Compound tooling is a process where a part is manufactured by a press tool in just one motion by using both a blanking tool and a piercing tool at once. Compound tooling, like every press tool, is utilized for manufacturing parts from sheet metal for high quantity production. Like every press tool, compound tooling has a higher production rate and lower cost compared to other fabrication methods, such as die casting and machining.
Northern Industrial Manufacturing delivers cost effective, high quality compound tooling of medium to high volume parts while keeping your labor and die costs down. Our attention to detail has won us awards like the GM Global Supplier Excellence Award, and ZF Supplier of the year.
